Senior Cloud Engineer (hybrid)

About this role

The Azure Application Hosting team at Swiss Re is seeking an experienced Cloud Engineer with a focus on Kubernetes and Azure Cloud. In this role, you'll engage in Infrastructure as Code, automation, and application hosting using Kubernetes. Your main responsibility will be to manage and improve our shared application hosting platform for various types of applications in the Azure cloud.

A significant part of your role involves the further engineering of the platform, but also ensuring the stability and operability of the platform. This includes automating operational processes as much as possible. You will also participate in an on-call rotation, approximately once every two months, to handle high-priority incidents, with the frequency expected to decrease as our team grows.

Your work will include managing a managed PaaS platform, covering aspects like fully automated secret management, storage, and identity management for application teams. You'll also be involved in migrating new applications to the public cloud and optimizing existing setups.

The team is based in Zürich, Switzerland, and Madrid, Spain. We're looking for someone who is ready to contribute to our team's efforts and support Swiss Re's cloud initiatives.

Personality requirements and skills:

At Swiss Re's Azure Application Hosting team, we understand that nobody is perfect, and it's rare for someone to meet 100% of the requirements. However, if you have the core qualifications listed below and a genuine curiosity about multi-cloud environments and tool building, we are eager to get to know you.

To be successful in this role, you should possess the following technical skills and knowledge:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Expertise in Kubernetes: Demonstrated deep understanding and practical experience with Kubernetes.
  • Programming and Infrastructure as Code: Experience in programming languages and tools, preferably including PowerShell, Golang, and Pulumi.
  • Experience in Application Hosting: At least 4 years of experience in application hosting environments.
  • Public Cloud Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience with Azure and/or AWS public cloud platforms.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced Kubernetes Skills: Proficiency in writing and operating Kubernetes operators.
  • Authentication/Authorization Knowledge: Familiarity with modern authentication and authorization protocols like OAuth and OIDC.
  • Site Reliability Engineering: Interest or knowledge in the principles of site reliability engineering.
  • Cloud Security: Understanding of, or interest in, cloud security practices.
  • Infrastructure Pipelines: Experience in working with infrastructure pipelines is a plus.
