Senior Quality Engineer

About the Team and our Scope

Our team, a software house within Swiss Re, develops cloud-native (Azure-based) SaaS/PaaS solutions for external Life & Health insurance clients. Our portfolio includes established products like Magnum and those in growth or incubation stages, used globally. We utilize the latest technology and prioritize innovation to stay competitive.

Our technical team comprises over 150 professionals with multidisciplinary skills, located in various countries, delivering highly available, multi-regional solutions used worldwide.

About role

As a Senior Quality Engineer specializing in automation, you will take ownership of the automation strategy with our product engineering teams. You will lead to the design, implementation, and evolution of advanced automated testing frameworks, driving continuous improvement in test quality and coverage. You’ll act as a mentor for the Quality Engineers, communicate testing outcomes to diverse stakeholders, setting the standard for quality and innovation across the organization.

Your responsibilities will be:

1) Quality Ownership & Manual Testing Excellence

  • Own end-to-end product quality across the L&H suite, leading risk-based test strategy and execution across manual and automated testing.

  • Drive strong manual testing practices (exploratory, scenario-based, regression, UAT, production validation) to ensure deep coverage of real-world workflows and edge cases.

  • Promote & drive a “quality is everyone’s responsibility” culture while maintaining clear QA governance, transparency, and traceability through high-value documentation.

2) Build and mentor a high-performing QA / QE team

  • Mentor and manage the existing team of Quality Engineers, creating clarity on roles, expectations, and growth paths across manual and automation skill sets.

  • Strengthen product knowledge and QA Skillset across the team, ensuring QA can validate what matters most to end-users.

  • Introduce best practices for collaboration with Product and Engineering teams including  shift-left reviews, acceptance criteria quality etc.

3) Test strategy, process and framework improvements

  • Identify, plan, and own improvements to QA processes and frameworks across the product suite: test planning, environments, test data, defect workflows, release governance, and reporting.

  • Implement risk-based testing and quality gates that balance speed with confidence.

4) Automation as an accelerator

  • Lead the design and continuous improvement of scalable automation frameworks and suites where they add the most value (e.g., smoke, regression, API/integration, critical E2E flows).

  • Ensure automation complements manual testing by focusing on repeatable, high-signal tests and freeing humans to do deeper exploratory and usability validation.

  • Write and enforce maintainable automation code aligned to internal standards (readable, modular, low-flake, well-documented).

5) Tooling, CI/CD integration, and reliability

  • Evaluate and integrate testing tools across manual and automation needs: test management, reporting dashboards, build verification, IDE/tooling accelerators.

  • Reduce “false failures” and improve feedback cycles through stability initiatives (flaky test management, environment health checks, repeatability).

6) Accessibility + inclusive quality built into delivery

  • Integrate accessibility best practices into both manual and automated testing (e.g., WCAG standards, keyboard navigation, screen reader support, cross-browser validation), and coach teams to treat accessibility as a core quality dimension, validated early in the development lifecycle rather than as a late-stage check.

7) AI-enabled quality

  • Introduce AI-assisted approaches to accelerate both manual and automated testing: smarter test design, faster exploration, better defect clustering, improved regression selection.

  • Put governance around AI use (privacy, traceability, human review for critical scenarios) and track measurable outcomes.

8) Cross-functional leadership and stakeholder influence

  • Collaborate deeply with Product, Engineering, Architecture, and Client stakeholders to ensure requirements are testable and quality expectations are aligned.

  • Provide executive-level communication: clear updates on quality posture, risks, trade-offs, and recommendations.

  • Lead by influence, balancing pragmatism with high standards in complex delivery environments.

About You

If you possess traits and experience that match most of the below, we’d love to hear from you:

  • Hands-on experience in test automation, with strong familiarity in CI/CD pipelines to enable efficient test automation and continuous integration.

  • Proven record of executing QA strategies and unification of QA processes.

  • Experience designing automation solutions for complex architectures covering, services, files, and databases.

  • Able to perform QA testing across both front-end (user interface) and back-end (server, APIs, databases) components of applications.

  • Strong QA experience with a solid background in Enterprise Java technologies.

  • Proficient in Java/J2EE, REST, JUnit/TestNG, and various test automation frameworks.

  • Experience with front-end web application test automation tools including Selenium, WebDriver, Grid, Cucumber, TestNG, JUnit, JMeter, BlazeMeter.

  • Experience REST API testing, data validation testing, and integration testing.

  • Hands-on experience with automation tools and frameworks like WDIO, Coded UI, SoapUI, Postman, Protractor, Rest Assured, TestComplete, and PyTest.

  • Strong experience in compatibility testing and regression testing.

  • Preferrable experience in leading and managing automation teams, while providing technical guidance and solutions to support successful delivery.

  • Experience in Azure environment and services, good understanding of Kubernetes and containerization
