About the role

We are looking for a risk engineer to work in our Property business segment in North American and Latin America and provide technical advice to property underwriters especially with regards to Swiss Re’s mining (surface/ underground & ore/coal mining and processing facilities, smelting/refining) as well as utilities business (combined cycle power plants, conventional steam power plants, hydro electrical plants and renewable energy). You will advise our underwriters on risk quality, loss estimates, capacity allocation and loss prevention measures for large mining and utilities accounts.


Your role as risk engineer will also encompass carrying out on-site risk inspections and operations reviews to assess our clients' risk mitigation approaches.


Swiss Re's clientele are represented by all major industrial and commercial clients (local and international). However, you will be mainly responsible to support our mining and utilities business but as business dictates. Additionally you could also provide support for other heavy industries like smelting and steel industries.


About the team

As a member of our global Risk Engineering Services (RES) team you will be our expert in these dedicated core industries. This will allow you to contribute to various projects and papers involving best practices, guidelines, U/W conditions, technology and industry updates. Finally, you will be responsible for enhancing Natural Perils risk assessment methods for single risks - with focus on the mining and utilities business.

This role has global responsibilities and the team come from a diverse range of backgrounds, so you should be comfortable working in a truly international environment.

About You

- Mechanical / mining / electrical engineer, geologist, process engineer or equivalent education

- Several years' experience in the mining and/or power industry (mining/process unit leader, design, commissioning, maintenance or inspection, project superintendent etc.)

- Previous experiences as "insurance" risk engineer would be appreciated but is not a necessity

- Experience or strong interest in loss prevention topics (e.g. fire protection; technical risk management)

- Sound knowledge of international loss prevention/fire protection standards (e.g. NFPA or equivalent)

- (Re)-insurance knowledge would be of advantage

- Proficiency level in English and Spanish is a requirement – other language skills (e.g. Portuguese) desirable

- Service oriented mindset

- Working in a small team - a good team player approach is paramount

- Good presentation skills

- Capacity to work under pressure, multi-tasking

- High analytical capacity and focus on details

- Willingness to travel- worldwide
