About the role

We are looking for an agro underwriter to join our Structuring & Pricing Desk whose responsibility is to structure and underwrite crop shortfall, yield contingent commodity price, vegetation/weather index, and indemnity-based agro products for our global corporate client base. Indemnity-based products include bloodstock, livestock, aquaculture, forestry and crop/hail insurance.

 

In 2008 we started our Food & Agriculture Business (FAB) with the mandate to develop, solicit, structure and selling risk transfer solutions for corporations active across the agricultural supply chain. Our corporate clients are mainly, input suppliers, corporate farming operations, logistics and trading companies, raw material processors, banks and other financial institutions. Since then the FAB has substantially grown and in order to sustain/further grow the business, an additional agro underwriter with solid agronomic knowledge, flair for numbers, knowledge and expertise in indemnity-based products (advantageous but not required) and business acumen is needed, also knowledge in direct insurance.

 

You will closely work with your agro origination colleagues who are responsible for business sourcing, negotiating price and terms & conditions of the aforementioned products worldwide. This job also requires close work with your Weather & Energy underwriting colleagues as well as people from middle or back office functions.

 

Main tasks/activities:

  • understanding client motivation and rational
  • identifying deal risks and its drivers
  • analyzing underlying data along with other ancillary data and/or information such as market intelligence reports, market trends and establishing forward looking views
  • using existing and developing new risk assessment model(s)
  • providing WAP (walk away price), views, feedback and suggestions to Origination
  • adhering to underwriting standards and operational procedures
  • administrating physical or electronic files and entering deals into systems
  • setting up deal valuation process (M2M)
  • maintaining yield statistic database

 

Work hand in hand with originators and underwriting colleagues and being in the loop of all client / market discussions by:

  • regularly participating in client meetings or calls
  • giving structural advice or new ideas to support sales arguments
  • providing quotes timely and within dead lines
  • drive demand based product innovation

 

About You

  • University degree in agriculture, agronomics, mathematics, quantitative science or equivalent education
  • Working experience in insurance and/or agro industry is an advantage.
  • Experience in risk neutral modelling techniques, knowledge of stochastic calculus with a solid statistical/actuarial background
  • Excellent computer/data manipulation skills using MS Office
  • Experience in using programming language like VBA / C++ or statistical packages like MATLAB, R or S-PLUS is an advantage
  • Team player personality with strong communication skills
  • Ability to manage time and prioritize in order to complete multiple tasks in a timely manner
  • Very accurate and reliable working attitude
  • Willingness to expend extra efforts to cover seasonal peak workloads with very short response times
  • Business sense and desire to succeed in a profit-orientated environment
  • Sound and consistent decision-making skills
  • Creative and open to new solutions
  • Excellent command of English (written and spoken), any other European languages are an advantage
