Underwriter Energy | Mexico City - Hybrid Work Model (50% at office/50% remote)

About the Role:

You will be part of the regional Energy team headquartered in Mexico focused mainly on Mexico Direct business as well as Mexico and Central America Wholesale. You will be responsible for underwriting Energy Onshore, Mining, Power generation and Utilities accounts and growing the book of business as well as for developing and managing client/broker relationships. The position includes underwriting, client management and marketing tasks as well as the administration of your own client portfolio.

The underwriting component involves the analysis of coverage (namely Property Damage and Business Interruption), exposures, wordings, premium calculation and the technical insurability/re-insurability of energy risks such as oil & gas facilities, petrochemicals, pipelines, underground and surface mines, thermal power plants of all kinds (but excluding nuclear risks), renewables, waste treatment and water treatment facilities amongst others.

An important part of your job will be the discussion and negotiation of terms and conditions with both clients and brokers. You will be responsible for the appropriate contractual documentation of the risks covered.

The marketing component of your job will consist of working with existing and prospective brokers and clients to develop new business and profitably grow the book of business. Along with the team you will be responsible for maintaining and developing strategic relationships with key broker producers and clients, and, where necessary, making presentations about our underwriting capabilities. You will also be expected to coordinate with various other areas in and out of Corporate Solutions to maximize cross-selling traditional and nontraditional opportunities.


Key Activities:

  • Renew allocated existing book of business and underwrite new business opportunities profitably.
  • Lead marketing activities to build up and maintain visibility of the local office among the various players in the market.
  • Actively cultivate and manage strategic relationships with selected corporate and local brokers.
  • Closely working with both the Swiss Corporate Solutions team as well as the Global teams and using resources elsewhere in the Group (Products, Risk Engineering, Claims Management, Actuaries, etc.).
  • Negotiating final terms & conditions with the broker in line with the business plan and corporate guideline requirements. Servicing post-underwriting needs.
  • Establishes and maintains industry know-how, e.g. by attending site inspections where necessary.
  • Contributing to the operational needs of the team - individual and departmental, e.g. assisting in premium control issues.
  • Sharing experience and expertise with other members of the team, individually and during meetings.


About You:

  • Fluent English and Spanish (written and spoken).
  • Preferably Two (2) two five (5) years of proven experience in the insurance sector.
  • Engineering, natural sciences, business or economics, mathematical or analytical background desirable.
  • Insurance/reinsurance knowledge is required.
  • Proven negotiation skills.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Team player with willingness to help and assist others.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Able to live in an atmosphere of constant change.
  • Good ability to prioritize and work with tight schedules.
  • Willingness and ability to travel within Region as needed.
  • Highly motivated individual with an entrepreneurial mindset to turn customer needs into deals (both traditional and non-traditional/alternative solutions).
