About the Team


Our Corporate Solutions (CorSo) EMEA regional team is expanding! We are looking for a lawyer who would become a part of our team. We are ten lawyers, located in various places in EMEA. CorSo business in EMEA writes primary and excess direct insurance and reinsurance business including property, casualty, professional liability, accident and health, and credit/surety lines of business, as large bespoke structured transactions, international programmes and larger volumes of smaller policies that are underwritten and delivered digitally.


About the Role


You would serve as a technical legal specialist for the Corporate Solutions Legal EMEA team focusing on digital transactions, especially the digital delivery of insurance policies.

You would be expected to enable regional business growth while serving as a gatekeeper to prevent legal, regulatory and reputational harm. You would provide business enabling, corporate governance and regulatory advice to underwriters, application designers, business development specialists and business leaders within Corporate Solutions' EMEA region. You would analyze complex and novel regulatory and legal issues and draft transaction documents and legal advice memos


Business Partnering/business Legal Support:


  • Serving as a trusted legal advisor to and initial point of legal contact for Corporate Solutions businesses seeking to transact insurance business via (a) the platforms of large tech companies hosting businesses (b) platforms hosted by insurtech brokers and (c) internal Swiss Re digital platforms

  • Providing in-depth legal advice designed to enable and supporting digital insurance transactions, setting up of digital platforms and ecosystems while following applicable local laws and regulations (including supporting the business to set-up the necessary internal processes required by digital transactions)

  • Advising regarding general insurance regulatory issues whether the business is transacted digitally or traditionally

  • Handling complex regional legal issues and developments

  • Using research and collaboration (Office 365, proprietary applications) tools to quickly identify and analyze issues and communicate advice and written guidance

  • Supporting corporate acquisitions by participating in due diligence and integration activities in support of the firm's M&A professionals especially where the transaction includes digital applications

  • Preferably, advising on technology law issues such as limitation of liability, licensing of applications, data location requirements, data privacy, cloud, anti-trust/competition laws and protection of intellectual property

  • Supporting the creation and maintenance of templates suitable for digital (re)insurance transactions in the region

  • Handling of external legal advisors specialized in digital transformation


Coordination and collaboration with partners:


  • Coordinating across essential functions within the company to ensure holistic assessment and mitigation of risks relating to a digital (re)insurance transactions,

  • Coordinating with lawyers and compliance officers assigned to other teams within Swiss Re's Legal & Compliance Division on significant matters that affect the Group's reputation, regulatory relationships or operations

  • Supporting Dispute Resolution specialists in the handling of complex disputes and regulatory matters

  • Partnering and collaborating with other key regional functional partners


About you


  • Admitted to the bar in an EMEA country

  • Minimum of 5 years legal experience in a well-respected law firm or insurance carrier; more experience is a plus (e.g. insurance distribution or insurTech)

  • Significant experience in advising about insurance regulatory matters; insurance defence counsel experience with no other regulatory experience does not meet this requirement

  • Knowledge of direct and excess domestic and international insurance, including understanding of distribution networks, broker and MGA relationships, and insurance regulatory issues is preferred

  • Experience with key compliance risks, including data protection, international trade controls, anti-money laundering, antitrust and competition, and market conduct

  • Outstanding communication, and collaboration skills

  • Proficiency in English required; Spanish or French is an advantage

  • Must identify, research and analyse difficult issues in ambiguous circumstances

  • Ability to meet challenging deadlines and work in a demanding, fast-paced environment

  • Preferably, an experienced negotiator of agreements with third parties

  • Strong ability to build trust relationships with client groups and key partners

  • Excellent writer and editor of written documents

  • High integrity, with ability to apply the highest ethical standards and maintain independence as a lawyer

  • Strong presentation skills, with Word and Power Point proficiency

  • Occasional travel required
