About the Role

As a Graduate Underwriting Analyst, you will develop a 360° understanding of Engineering and Specialty Reinsurance while supporting underwriting teams across markets. Working closely with underwriters, engineers, client managers, pricing specialists and risk professionals, you will analyze complex risks, support underwriting decisions and contribute to solving real business challenges from day one. The role provides exposure to construction, infrastructure, industrial, manufacturing and energy projects, including emerging sectors such as renewable energy, battery manufacturing, data centres, semiconductor facilities and hydrogen-related technologies.

Through structured learning, mentoring and practical underwriting experience, you will have developed a broad understanding of underwriting, portfolio management, claims, client engagement, and risk assessment while establishing the foundation for a specialized career within Swiss Re.

Your responsibilities include

  • Review and analyse engineering and construction risk submissions from a wide range of industries.
  • Assess project information, engineering reports, construction methodologies, project schedules and risk mitigation measures.
  • Support underwriting evaluations by analysing technical, commercial and operational risk factors.
  • Review claims experience, loss trends, natural catastrophe exposures and market developments.
  • Assist in preparing underwriting recommendations, pricing analysis and portfolio reviews.
  • Conduct research on emerging technologies, industry trends and evolving engineering risks.
  • Collaborate with underwriters, risk engineers to develop a comprehensive view of each risk.
  • Participate in client discussions, broker meetings and market-facing activities to develop commercial and relationship management skills.
  • Support portfolio monitoring, data analytics, process improvement and underwriting innovation initiatives.
  • Explore the use of AI, automation and data-driven tools to enhance underwriting insights and decision-making.
  • Contribute to cross-functional projects to gain an end-to-end understanding of the underwriting value chain.

 

About You

We are looking for people who:

  • Have completed (in an after 2024), or are about to complete, a Bachelor's in Engineering or Master's degree in Engineering, Construction, Risk Management and Insurance or a related discipline. This opportunity is designed primarily for recent graduate talent/post graduate talent, though candidates with relevant doctoral degrees may also be considered.
  • Have a strong academic track record and a genuine interest in engineering and infrastructure projects.
  • Have no more than three years of professional experience.
  • Possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Enjoy working with data, analyzing complex information and developing practical solutions.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrate initiative, integrity, accountability and attention to detail.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills and the confidence to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Are eager to learn and develop a long-term career within underwriting and risk management.
  • Have proficiency in MS Excel, PowerPoint and other analytical tools.

The Global engineering team provides reinsurance solutions for complex construction, infrastructure, energy and industrial projects across the world.

The team works on some of the world's most critical and innovative projects, including transportation infrastructure, power generation facilities, renewable energy developments, advanced manufacturing plants, industrial facilities and emerging technology-related risks.

As part of Swiss Re's global Engineering team, you will collaborate with colleagues across multiple geographies and disciplines, gaining exposure to international markets, global underwriting practices and diverse engineering challenges. The team combines technical expertise, underwriting excellence, portfolio management and market knowledge to help clients manage uncertainty and support sustainable growth.
