(Senior) Engineering Reinsurance Underwriter (Hybrid; m/f/x/d; 80-100%)

About the Role

As a (Senior) Engineering Reinsurance Underwriter, you will be at the heart of Swiss Re's Engineering underwriting operations, developing and managing treaty and facultative reinsurance business across the German, Austrian, and Nordic markets - while also supporting broader EMEA activities. This is a role where technical expertise meets client strategy, and where your decisions directly contribute to Swiss Re's market-leading position in Engineering reinsurance.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite Engineering treaty and facultative business with a primary focus on Germany, Austria and the Nordic markets, including thorough technical and actuarial assessments, wording reviews, and client negotiations
  • Conduct post-underwriting activities such as risk surveys, portfolio reviews, treaty and facultative account servicing, and claims support to ensure ongoing client satisfaction
  • Source and develop new Engineering business by deepening relationships with insurance companies and brokers - positioning Swiss Re as the preferred partner for construction, infrastructure, parametric, and renewable energy covers
  • Strengthen Swiss Re's leading market position in the German, Austrian, and Nordic engineering reinsurance space in alignment with company strategy
  • Deliver expert client service through timely advice, special acceptances, training sessions, and workshops that add tangible value
  • Drive product innovation by collaborating with clients to design tailored, forward-thinking reinsurance solutions that address emerging technological risks
  • Enhance Swiss Re's external visibility on Engineering topics through participation in market events, thought leadership articles, and social media engagement
  • Collaborate across business units to jointly identify and develop new business opportunities within Transactions and Solutions
  • Actively contribute to the Swiss Re Global Engineering community through knowledge sharing, special projects, and research initiatives
  • Support the implementation of strategic initiatives for the Special Lines business

We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:

  • 3+ years of experience in the (re)insurance industry, with a preference for Engineering Lines underwriting experience
  • Strong analytical skills with solid proficiency in common IT applications used in underwriting and risk assessment
  • Proficiency in English and German (written and spoken) to effectively engage with clients and colleagues across markets

 

These are additional nice to haves:

  • University degree in a scientific, commercial, engineering, or Computer Science field Experience in client markets or other lines of business such as facultative reinsurance or specialty lines
  • Interest and aptitude for technical topics, including construction, infrastructure, parametric covers, and renewable energy
  • Knowledge of additional languages beyond English and German
  • Experience working in or with Nordic or Austrian markets
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and make sound decisions in ambiguous or fast-moving situations 
  • Willingness to travel moderately for client meetings, market events, and team engagements
  • A collaborative, team-oriented approach with a high degree of client orientation

 

Salary Information

For Germany, the base salary range for the Underwriter position is between 71 000 EUR and 118 000 EUR and for the Senior Underwriter position between 99 000 EUR and 165 000 EUR for a full-time role.

  • The requirements, scope, complexity and responsibilities of the role
  • The applicant's own profile including education/qualifications, expertise, specialisation, skills and experience

In addition to your base salary, Swiss Re offers an attractive performance-based variable compensation component, designed to recognise your achievements. Furthermore, you will enjoy a variety of global and location specific benefits. Eligibility may vary depending on the terms of Swiss Re policies and your employment contract
