About the Role

Do you have career aspirations in the field of Portfolio Management by applying data driven insights – developing the product know-how and analytical skills necessary to maximize the profitability of a global UW portfolio?


The "Analyst Portfolio Steering P&S" an individual contributor position reporting into Head Portfolio Steering P&S within Corporate Solutions Business Unit. This role is established with the future Portfolio Steering P&S mandate in mind.


In this role, you would be playing a pivotal role in the execution of overall Portfolio Steering P&S team mandate by executing portfolio steering activities in collaboration with globally situated team members.


You will work closely with peers and stakeholders in Property & Specialty Bespoke Products underwriting with the common goal to drive profitable underwriting.


Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Employ data and line of business portfolio analytics to enhance the decision-making about risk selection, loss costing/pricing and actively enable the execution of global team mandate
  • Provide technical portfolio insight capabilities to optimize financial performance management and enhance the views on profitability of sub portfolios across the lines of business
  • Lead efforts on the continuous improvement of existing portfolio insights/analytic capabilities (in Palantir) and underlying data sources
  • Play an active role in generating data driven insights and business wide capabilities for complex bespoke and/or strategic business challenges and opportunities within the lines of business
  • Build up forward looking portfolio insights and data driven initiatives to actively support shaping the future direction of Property & Specialty lines of business sub-portfolios
  • Undertake portfolio management related work specific to the line(s) of business including risk and exposure profiling, treaty costing and loss modelling performance, deep dives, reinsurance submission preparation etc.
  • Strongly contribute to the overall global portfolio steering and portfolio management process across Level 1 and Level 2 sub-portfolios by framing underwriting portfolio insights, detecting trends etc. which lead to specific actions to improve and/or protect underwriting portfolios

About the Team

Portfolio Steering P&S team is responsible for driving portfolio management process to support portfolio owners for ensuring robustness of UW portfolios to provide sustainable profitability. Property & Specialty (P&S) include Property, Energy, Aviation, Engineering line of business within Swiss Re Corporate Solutions.

  • The team is envisaged to transform over time in line with future direction of Corporate Solutions, more specifically the set-up of Property & Special lines Bespoke Products management
  • The team shall leverage existing portfolio insights capabilities currently being built to manage nat cat portfolio management aspects by expanding development into other areas including man-made risk topics, also more broadly into other Property & Special lines underwriting sub-portfolio matters
  • The team manages important portfolio management tasks associated with natural catastrophe risk perils in particular
  • The team completes important product management activities associated with risk and exposure reporting, accumulation management, reinsurance submission preparation etc.
  • The team provides overarching portfolio insights to support the Global Line of Business Head Property & Specialty, Underwriting Centre and various other global stakeholders


Given the envisaged development of this team over time, the "Analyst Portfolio Steering P&S " position is pivotal for execution of global team mandate


The Portfolio Steering P&S is a global team with presence in Munich, Zurich, Bangalore and Colorado. The team also maintains direct collaboration with different functions in Swiss Re Corporate Solutions by acting as the key Property & Specialty link with Underwriting, Finance, Claims and 

Actuarial (pricing and reserving).


About You

  • Insurance industry knowledge in Property & Specialty lines underwriting, nat cat underwriting know-how and inter-related portfolio management disciplines (typically 2-5 years of progressively more responsible experience)
  • Adequate understanding of underwriting portfolio drivers in Property & Specialty lines of commercial insurance business
  • Ideally have a good understanding of portfolio loss modelling e.g. treaty underwriting techniques, other portfolio underwriting techniques, risk aggregation topics etc.
  • University business degree qualified in associated field with 7+  years of relevant work experience
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, flair for numbers and mathematics. Extensive knowledge of data analysis techniques and tools (R/SAS/Matlab) is a must
  • Expertise in various IT systems and modelling tools, knowledge with Palantir Foundry is an asset
  • Affinity for utilizing (new) technology to support sustainable data management, efficient data retrieval, data visualization and usage
  • Enjoys dealing with colleagues and cultures from across the world
  • Strong personality who enjoys taking ownership
  • Ability to prioritize and apply sound commercial judgment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, fluency in English compulsory
