Legal Counsel (Hybrid Work Model)

About the Role


Swiss Re's Capital Markets Legal Team has an open Legal Counsel position supporting the Environmental & Commodity Markets (ECM) business and working collaboratively with a diverse team. We are looking for someone keen to step in as a dedicated team player supporting innovative capital markets products.  In your role you will: 


  • Provide legal support to ECM, but may assist on capital markets projects throughout Swiss Re
  • Draft and negotiate weather, energy and agricultural commodity derivative contracts, related hedging documentation, joint venture and non-disclosure agreements, as well as advise on regulatory aspects of the business and on corporate governance matters
  • Assist in building the regulatory, documentation and compliance infrastructure as the business creates new products and enters new markets
  • Facilitate coordination of legal/regulatory issues among the business, the wider legal & compliance division, finance, risk management and other colleagues
  • Monitor legal and regulatory trends affecting relevant areas and advise and collaborate with Compliance and Risk Management colleagues in relation to preparation of reports, responses to inquiries and other regulatory matters
  • Foster and maintain positive working relationships with clients, colleagues and outside law firms
  • Conduct and/or arrange internal presentations and trainings on legal topics



About the Team


This is an exciting opportunity to join a global team that provides legal support to the Environmental & Commodity Markets (ECM) team at Swiss Re Corporate Solutions. ECM develops tailor-made weather and weather-contingent commodity price products which help protect energy and agricultural firms from adverse earnings caused by sales volume and commodity price risks. These solutions are provided globally and can be in the form of derivatives, insurance and reinsurance transactions. This role will focus primarily on the Americas and in derivatives transactions, although you may be able to contribute support on a wider set of transactions.



About You


Qualification and Experience:


  • Holds a law degree and qualification in New York, with a minimum of five years' experience in a law firm, re/insurance company or financial institution practicing in any of the following areas: derivatives, alternative risk transfer, or related capital markets transactions
  • Experience in weather, energy or agricultural commodity derivatives or similar insurance transactions is a plus
  • Confidence to act independently and to lead the legal support of a trading desk
  • Basic knowledge of Title VII of the Dodd-Frank Act, Commodity Exchange Act regulations and legal developments impacting derivatives
  • Understanding of the role of legal and compliance as control and challenge function and participation in risk management
  • Ability to identify relevant legal issues and when matters require escalation or greater oversight
  • Effective organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills to handle multiple requests and deadlines
  • Ability to understand, and operate successfully in a complex, matrixed corporate environment

For New York City the estimated base salary range for this position is $128,000 to $211,000.  The specific salary offered for this or any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, scope of role, qualifications, complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget.  At Swiss Re, we take a "total compensation approach" when making compensation decisions. This means that we consider all components of compensation in their totality (such as base pay, short-and long-term incentives, and benefits offered), in setting individual compensation.
