About the role

Are you striving to apply your science or engineering background to increase our resilience against natural catastrophes? Are you motivated to reduce the insurance protection gap by contributing to the development of novel solutions and commercial products? Are you interested in a role that will provide a stepping stone to long-term career advancement opportunities within the re/insurance sector, e.g. in underwriting, risk management or insurance solution design?

Seeking a motivated and technically inclined individual to work on cutting-edge and innovative natural catastrophe insurance transactions and products.  Job responsibilities range from programming and hazard analysis to providing both internal and external partners insights into and descriptions of how parametric natural catastrophe products work, and how they can benefit clients' overall insurance programs.  

- Working with the team both locally and in Zurich to design new parametric products to address clients' exposure to natural catastrophes, such as hurricanes and earthquakes.

- Liaising with external data providers to assess the quality and usability of new geophysical data sets, such as high-resolution satellite data.

- Modelling broker or client-requested parametric structures through Swiss Re's internal natural catastrophe modelling framework.

- Analysing and performing statistical calculations on geophysical data and associated time series. 

- Visualizing and combining various sources of data in GIS software, such as Google Earth and ArcGIS.

- Reviewing, editing and building client and broker presentations.

 

About the team

The parametric nat cat team is a small team of three experienced individuals, based in Zurich and New York.  Swiss Re has been at the forefront of the parametric insurance space since its initiation over two decades ago, and we constantly continue to expand and accelerate the acceptance of these insurance solutions by the broader insurance market.  Two members of the team have over 10 years of experience in the insurance industry, with 5 – 7 years in the parametric nat cat space.  The backgrounds of the team members are all technical – two have a background in atmospheric and related sciences and the other has a background in geology and seismology.  We are all very enthusiastic and passionate about this space of the insurance industry, and hope to find someone who shares our excitement for this novel and growing area of the insurance sector.

 

About You:

  • Successfully completed university degree (M.Sc. or higher), preferably in a physical science field, such as atmospheric science, seismology, hydrology or equivalent
  • Strong technical background in statistics and mathematics.  Programming skills using Matlab, Excel, and Visual Basic a plus.
  • Strong interest in/motivation to learn about insurance/reinsurance
  • Approaches problems with curiosity and open-mindedness and is a fast learner
  • Innovative, showing a high degree of own initiative
  • Team-player, willingness to contribute actively to the overall team spirit
  • Ability and enthusiasm to work in a global and multicultural environment, with the ability to be based in New York.
  • Aptitude to express him-/herself effectively in one-on-one conversations and small groups, and ability to think on his/her feet.
  • Mature & self-confident; Able to work with clients, business partners or senior colleagues
  • Capacity to readily adapt to a changing and dynamic environment
  • Proven expertise to work independently and proactively
  • Strong analytical skills and can focus on details without losing track of the bigger picture
  • Excellent oral and written English skills; additional language skills advantageous, in particular Spanish
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Very good communication and interpersonal skills
