Trade Finance - Senior Underwriter
About the Role & Team:
The Trade Finance & Working Capital Solutions team sits within our global Credit & Surety team. We are seeking a Senior Underwriter for our NAM trade finance and working capital solutions business. The ideal candidate will possess the capabilities to contribute significantly to the TF Board. The role involves a combination of transactional underwriting and client and broker relationship management. The products covered by this role include both corporate risks and FI risks (bank emerging market obligors) for single risks and portfolios of risks, initially focusing on corporate risks.
The global team's role is to provide insurance and risk participation agreement capacity and solutions for leading Trade Finance banks and other financial institutions as clients for risks ranging from cross-border trade to non-trade working capital transactions (excluding most structured commodities, project finance, and sovereign risks). The role also includes limited solutions for corporate clients (trade credit) and will involve extensive contact with brokers and clients.
The Opportunity:
After an appropriate onboarding and training period, the expectation is that you will quickly assume accountability within the team and add value by:
- Independently analyzing trade finance and working capital deals, with a strong emphasis on evaluating corporate risk including pricing, risk, policy wording, review of transactional documentation and providing deep expertise in underwriting various structures and underlying risk profiles. A strong understanding of portfolio and multi obligor transactions is required. FI obligor knowledge is also helpful.
- Managing client responsibilities and broker interactions with accountability for delivering around $10m GWP profitability.
- Being recognized by clients and brokers as a senior team member capable of executing client needs swiftly and with high-caliber underwriting.
- Presenting transactions to internal partners/ stakeholders and defending your positions with energy.
- Identifying and monitoring portfolio including credit, market, economic, and legal developments and provide timely escalations.
- Providing training to junior underwriters on obligors and related trade finance structures.
- Working on special projects to enhance our service offering such as underwriting guidelines.
About You:
- University diploma and/or at least 10-15 years of experience with a bank or insurance in Trade Finance or Credit Insurance.
- Outstanding understanding of assessing corporate risks and structures (FI also a plus).
- Strong experience in client-facing transactional/ structuring roles with clients (brokers a plus) .
- Strong interest in corporate risks, economic interdependencies, financial analysis, particularly applied to a range of economies and transactions worldwide.
- Proven ability to train more junior team members.
- Good analytical skills combined with a curious attitude.
- Inclusive team player with strong stakeholder management.
- Customer focus and service mentality managing deadlines & competing priorities.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Willingness to travel is a plus.
The estimated base salary range for this position is $112,000 to $180,000. The specific salary offered for any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, scope of role, qualifications, complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget. At Swiss Re, we take a "total compensation approach" when making compensation decisions. This means that we consider all components of compensation in their totality (such as base pay, short-and long-term incentives, and benefits offered), in setting individual compensation.
The position may be located in New York City or Armonk, NY. For the right individual, other office locations are also possible. Swiss Re has a hybrid work model where the expectation is that you will be in the office or visiting clients three days per week.
