Risk Engineer or Senior Risk Engineer- Western Region

You will work closely with customers, underwriters and brokers as the technical owner of Property Risk Engineering Services.

 

About the Role:

Our NA Property Risk Engineering Team is looking for a Risk Engineer with recognized experience and visibility in the NA Commercial Insurance Market with a successful track record in property loss prevention and control as both a field engineer and account engineer.  You would lead the account servicing for multinational and domestic large and medium sized corporate clients, as part of their property insurance programs. Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Supporting Swiss Re's – Western Region general property portfolio and continued growth in direct insurance, primary lead business, and international business.  Serve in an account engineer role supporting both bound business and in pursuing new business. 
  • Reviewing, interpreting, and summarizing risk assessments conducted by Swiss Re Corporate Solutions risk engineers, by service partners, as well as third party insurance risk engineers.
  • Collaborating with and advising underwriters on risk quality and exposure of existing accounts and new business, to achieve preferred risk selection.
  • Performing account engineering functions including developing customer service plans, negotiating fees, coordinating field servicing, service partner management and interacting with the underwriter, broker and client to serve and meet the needs of our customers.
  • Becoming proficient and efficient using of Risk Engineering data analytic tools to perform account portfolio analysis, develop account stewardship, materials, provide value added customer support, and to drive risk improvement efforts.
  • Periodically, conducting on-site risk assessments and operations reviews to verify our customers' or prospect customer's risk mitigation approaches and to provide customers with risk improvement suggestions.
  • Preparation of external loss control and internal underwriting information reports as well as developing project loss control specifications and performing project plan review.
  • Developing strategies to expand our position on current accounts and to cross-sell other lines of business in cooperation with the underwriters and distribution managers.
  • Closely interacting with customers, underwriters, and brokers as part of the production, underwriting, and servicing lifecycle of accounts.
  • Work in close collaboration with the Customer Distribution Management and Claims departments while servicing existing customers or prospecting new business.

This may also include driving various projects, initiatives, development and implementation of strategies, creating standard methodologies, guidelines or papers and industry updates or developing new innovative service offerings.

 

About You:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (mechanical / electrical / industrial / civil)
  • Strong Risk Engineering / Property Loss Prevention background (> 5 years – Risk Engineer, or 7 – 10 yrs.- Sr. Risk Engineer, relevant experience in property risk engineering with a reputable provider)
  • Property insurance background, or combination of property insurance and industrial experience.
  • Knowledge of layout and construction, fire protection systems (sprinkler systems, alarm systems, etc.) and human element property conservation programs (i.e. Hot Work Permit Program, Fire Protection Impairment Supervision Program, etc.) is fundamentally important. 
  • Combined field engineer / account engineer experience
  • Strong understanding and expertise associated with NatCat exposures – Earthquake / Flood / Windstorm / etc.
  • Expertise in property loss prevention and loss control for a broad range of industries and commercial businesses, including general manufacturing, plastic working, food, real estate, retail, warehousing, metal working, technology, health care, and hospitality.
  • Specialized industry expertise / experience in the following industries: chemical, steel, automotive, pharmaceutical, telecom, semiconductor, and forestry (woodworking and pulp & paper).
  • Working knowledge of NFPA standards as well as practical knowledge of Factory Mutual data sheets or similar Highly Protected Risk (HPR) standards
  • Ability to develop maximum possible loss, anticipated loss potential and normal loss potential scenarios in line with property insurance industry practices
  • Link loss prevention expertise with loss experience to enable emerging loss trends analysis and collaboration across RES, underwriting and claims
  • Strong interpersonal and customer facing skills, both written and verbal\
  • Proficient digital literacy (e.g., Microsoft Office products, work with databases, data analytics) and ideally an affinity to digital solutions (technical savviness).  Experience / expertise with data analytics, benchmarking, portfolio risk management and/or automation capabilities.
  • Good level of energy and pro-active behavior
  • Business acumen, team player, customer commitment & service mindset

Travel may be required periodically (Mainly within the US)

 

For California, the estimated base salary range for the Risk Engineer level is $112,000 to $180,000 and the Senior Risk Engineer level is $156,000 to $246,000. The specific salary offered for this or any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, scope of role, qualifications, complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget.
