About the role

We are looking for a Property Treaty Underwriter with a minimum of 6 years' experience in treaty underwriting preferably in South East Asian Property Market and good contacts amongst both and local cedents and reinsurance brokers.

 A large part of your job will entail examining, underwriting and developing property treaty business in accordance with defined marketing objectives and profitability targets for South East Asia /India and Korean markets. You will be responsible for both underwriting and communicating underwriting decisions to client managers, helping client managers pitch to new prospective clients and business segments, suggesting alternate structures and advising on underwriting aspects of portfolios or special acceptances into a treaty, whilst at the same time managing the country  portfolios allocated to you.


Apart from analysing and underwriting treaty risks that will fall under your remit you will be deploying capacity appropriately according to risk quality, risk appetite and the Group guidelines within the framework of the company's underwriting authority.

 In addition you will be the underwriter for transactions and structured solutions for your markets and will be working with designated structurers on specific deals.


Your Natural catastrophe underwriting skills will be required to develop new Natcat products for the market including indexed and parametric products and in this connection you will work closely with clients and our public sector partnership business for a significant part of your time in the team.


About the team

You will be part of a team of underwriters working in the property treaty desk for South East Asia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and India. The team forms part of the property products Hub for Asia.

The team is part of the cross functional team and interacts with Client managers /market underwriters / actuaries / structurers /modellers across the region in various branch /service offices apart from Singapore.



About You

  1. You are a technically strong underwriter with the ability to analyse and cost treaty risks both for proportional and non-proportional business and then advised appropriate reinsurance terms and conditions in accordance with Swiss Re's criteria and parameters and guidelines ..
  2. You must understand Asian Natural Catastrophe exposures and be conversant with modelling techniques and usage of catastrophe models and be cognisant of local Market conditions in each Asian country. You need not be a modeller from your background but should have the ability to use models/challenge models and assist modellers to develop new models.
  3. Your commercial mind-set and strong project management skills will be advantageous.
  4. You have excellent influencing and presentation skills and are able to correspond and also discuss personally your risk view as well as business opportunities with client managers or as part of a deal team with a client.
  5. You also have the ability to work under pressure and are a team player who can work independently and also takes responsibility for making decisions.
  6. Your written and verbal communication skills in English are excellent. Any other local language skills will be an advantage.
  7. Systems and processes are a strong factor when working for Swiss Re, so the ability to work with potentially new underwriting as well as administrative systems are key, including learning them well and in a short time.
  8. This will include an element of marketing and business travel to facilitate. Additionally, you will be expected to possess and apply your client and product knowledge to provide clients with adequate, joint solutions which meet their needs. Your job will involve interaction with other internal teams in order to create and leverage the market.


Position can either be a VP or AVP level.
