Senior Casualty Treaty Underwriter
About the Role
We are looking for an ambitious Senior Casualty Treaty Underwriter to actively contribute to the local business as well as the Asia and Global Casualty plans and initiatives. You will be responsible for underwriting renewal and new profitable casualty treaty business, mainly originating out of the Australia & New Zealand markets. As part of the APAC Casualty Team, you will actively contribute to local and global business objectives.
This will incorporate:
- Internally and externally working with the Key Account Manager (KAM) and Cross Functional (XFT) Teams
- Managing all underwriting aspects of the treaty value chain including underwriting, pricing, client/broker interactions and internal processes
Key responsibilities:
Underwriting – Core and Transactions
- Analyses treaty submissions and extracts key information for underwriting
- Evaluates original insurance wordings and Treaty contracts for coverage aspects and compliance with Swiss Re requirements
- Uses appropriate underwriting tools and pricing models/methodologies
- Collaborates with other business units, such as Actuarial, Claims and Legal teams
- Follows best practice, and complies with underwriting guidelines and renewal messages
- Supports the Desk Head in monitoring the risk landscape and the impact on strategy
- Gathers data, analyses risk, determines steering values, and structures deals
- Escalates cases exceeding UW authority in accordance with referral procedures
- Prepares decision on final structure, share, premium/rates, terms and conditions. Makes such decisions jointly with the respective KAM and supports negotiation
- Manages files and effectively uses the Business Process Management systems
- Supports the team with peer reviews, knowledge transfer, priorities, and projects. Also provides renewal support to other markets in APAC where needed
- Supports the Cross Functional Team (XFT) on underwriting P&C Structured Solutions
Client and broker interactions
- Seeks out new opportunities to originate business, provide structured solutions for clients, and considers innovative solutions to client needs
- Build strong relationships with clients and brokers through regular interactions and optimum service to support better business outcomes
- Strengthens Swiss Re's value proposition and brand franchise
- Supports technical training and knowledge exchange for clients and brokers
- Coordinates, performs or contributes to client file reviews and audits as required
Planning and Controlling/Risk Management
- Provides input to Market Unit business plans
- Contributes to updating and enhancing tools (eg Pricing models) and parameters
- Helps ensure ORM compliance and contributes to the ORM process as appropriate
- Contributes to reports such as the Renewal Update report
About You
- Strong experience in casualty underwriting of pricing, portfolio analysis, treaty structures and contracts. Experience of 8+ years in treaty underwriting preferred
- High level client management ability, negotiation skills, influencing capability, and proven relationship building skills
- Analytical proficiency (Actuarial experience viewed positively)
- Robust contract knowledge
- Solid knowledge of: CTP and Workers Compensation schemes; as well as knowledge in the legal, social, economic, and technological trends that impact re/insurance
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Aptitude to engage colleagues, work well in Teams, and also independently
- Flexibility in working hours and travel where needed, given regional and global interactions
- Proactive problem-solving mindset and innovative spirit approach
- Independently build market connections through meetings, functions and events
- Robust adherence to underwriting practices and guidelines
- Professional qualification in insurance e.g. ANZIIF CII, ALU, FALU, etc. preferred
- Bachelor degree or post graduate level qualification in relevant field preferred
