About the Role


The L&H ANZ Underwriting team are currently seeking an experienced Senior Underwriter to cover a period of parental leave (with flexibility for part-time, minimum 3 days per week required).


The successful candidate will have strong financial and medical underwriting experience allowing them to hit the ground running.


As part of the L&H Underwriting team, you will use your skills and experience to create a competitive advantage for Swiss Re by marketing and providing leading edge reinsurance underwriting services and offering pro-active advice; including value added services through the effective implementation of best practice standards in all facets of case underwriting, from decisions to processes, procedures and philosophies.


Responsibilities include:

  • Assessment of both group and individual life risks from clients in accordance with underwriting guidelines and best practice;
  • Assessment of group and individual life risk within agreed SLA's;
  • Establishes & maintains strong relationships with client underwriters;
  • Maintaining operational risk management practices, procedures and protocols;
  • Embodies Swiss Re’s high professional profile through client contacts as well as participation in local underwriting committees and insurance associations;
  • Identifies and resolves service issues with clients;
  • Support delivery of underwriting related services, ensuring these are delivered to clients at a high standard, e.g. underwriting seminars, underwriting training etc;
  • Support and monitor internal underwriting control and compliance frameworks; and
  • Ability to handle change and the flexibility to work effectively within a changing environment.

About the Team


The L&H Underwriting team provides underwriting services across in both Australia and New Zealand (ANZ). Services extend across all lines of Life & Health business. The ANZ team is a dynamic group of people with a broad range of risk, product and international market experience. Our team contributes to many of the wider Swiss Re local and global teams, project groups (both underwriting and more widely associated topics such as automation, behavioural economics, data and predictive analytics and other social sciences) together with evidence-based research and other relevant risk pieces of work.


About You



  • Significant experience in financial and medical underwriting, either reinsurance and/or direct office underwriting;
  • Extensive knowledge of the Australia and New Zealand insurance/reinsurance industry and knowledge of the main products, services and regulations, including knowledge of our competitors and clients.Professional qualification in life and disability underwriting, e.g. ALUCA, ANZIIF CII, ALU, FALU, etc;
  • Bachelor degree or post graduate level qualification in relevant field desirable; and
  • Committed to continued professional development.
