Business Development Manager

About the role  

The Business Development (BD) Manager, Tokyo has a relentless focus on understanding clients' needs today and tomorrow, developing corresponding client solutions, driving innovation as well as the transaction pipeline with relevant opportunities. 

You are strategic and forward looking – someone who is continuously identifying the next opportunity to maximize the value creation for both Swiss Re and our clients, thereby constructively challenging the status quo. You are also comfortable navigating ambiguity and managing change.  

Your primary work focus is to support on ideas generation, origination, development and execution of transactional business opportunities in Japan. You are expected to prioritize, advance, and challenge business themes with a commercial mindset. You generate ideas and client dialogue to maximize client impact. 

You will work closely with various functions across Swiss Re, including Client Markets and structuring units, to drive both transactional and other business growth in Property & Casualty as well as Life & Health.

Achieve in-depth insights into client strategy & financial condition utilizing publicly available data (e.g. financial statements, research reports, etc.) as well as insights garnered from discussions with client managers and market participants

Research & Analysis of market themes and industry trends in Japan which may develop into business opportunities (e.g. capital efficiency and management, regulatory and accounting changes, M&A activities)

Uncover and analyse the implications of the new ESR regulations (Economic value-based solvency ratio) on insurers financial KPIS and work with the Swiss Re team to ideate reinsurance solutions to solve clients needs

Identify new market needs/ themes in order to generate meaningful business opportunities and push these ideas ahead several steps within BD and in a deal team

Understand how different Swiss Re offerings may affect a client in terms of accounting, rating agency, and equity valuation aspects

Build financial models for individual clients, projecting financial statements to assess the impact of our solutions for the clients

Produce high quality, replicable analytics & client presentation materials (including, but not limited to, visually attractive and compelling pitch books) of a standard comparable to investment banks or management consultants

Act as BD partner for key client accounts; be a trusted advisor on specific deal teams, developing new transactional growth ideas and helping Cross Functions Team (XFT) sell the value of solutions to the clients

Support Japan strategic initiatives with strong client focus 

About the team  

BD sits within the Reinsurance Business Unit and focuses on originating profitable reinsurance business across all client segments (Globals, Large and Regional & National). 

BD is a global function and collaborates frequently across locations and regions. You would benefit from interacting and collaborating with other BD colleagues who have diverse background such as actuarial, science, finance or economics. Besides, we work closely together with client managers, structurers, underwriters and other functions.  

BD Japan team aims to make the most impacts for Japan based clients through developing research, analytics, and client presentations around financial/ capital aspects of Swiss Re's clients.

About You  

Technical skills/ experience

Superb quantitative (financial) and qualitative analytical capabilities (e.g. through degree course and/or professional qualifications)

Strong knowledge and interest in the areas of (re)insurance, corporate finance, accounting as well as company valuation drivers

Insurance experience either in Property & Casualty or in Life & Health is preferred

Written & verbal communication in Japanese and English
