Are you keen to combine technical insight with client-facing impact in the Japanese reinsurance market? We're looking for a talented Client Underwriter to join Swiss Re Japan's P&C team in Tokyo. In this role, you'll take ownership of account management and underwriting for a portfolio of clients, contributing to the growth and development of our long-term partnerships across the Japanese market.
About the Role
As a Client Underwriter, you'll play a key role in managing and growing Swiss Re's P&C treaty business in Japan. You'll combine technical underwriting expertise with commercial insight to deliver value for clients and Swiss Re, while contributing to disciplined portfolio management and business origination.
Key Responsibilities
- Take personal ownership of reinsurance client relationships in the Japan domestic market
- Originate new business opportunities, contributing to portfolio growth and client value creation
- Perform end-to-end underwriting analysis for Property & Casualty treaty business (proportional and non-proportional), including costing & pricing, contract review and basic structuring
- Support and progressively take ownership of underwriting decisions in line with authority level and internal guidelines
- Support and progressively take ownership of negotiations around pricing and terms for reinsurance treaties
About the Team
Client Underwriting Japan is a Tokyo-based team responsible for Swiss Re's P&C reinsurance treaties with domestic clients. The team combines technical expertise with a collaborative and relationship-driven approach, working closely with clients, brokers and internal functions across Swiss Re's global network. You will join an experienced and supportive team environment that values collaboration, continuous development and strong client partnerships, with access to a broad cross-functional and international platform.
About You
You are a commercially minded and analytically capable professional who enjoys combining technical expertise with client engagement. You are comfortable working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and are motivated to take personal ownership of business relationships and decisions.
We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:
- 3+ years of experience in (re)insurance
- External communication skills (comfortable to represent Swiss Re with clients and brokers)
- Quantitative / analytical capability (expected to attain individual underwriting authority)
- Strong communication skills in Japanese (native or fluent) and English (business level)
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience (e.g. Engineering, Actuarial, Natural Sciences or related field)
These are additional nice to haves:
- Experience in P&C treaty underwriting, exposure to pricing and/or contract wording
- Understanding of the (re)insurance value chain and Japanese market dynamics
- Commercial mindset with negotiation and relationship-building skills
- Existing network within the Japanese P&C (re)insurance industry
Our company has a hybrid work model where the expectation is that you will be in the office at least three days per week
For Japan, the base salary range for this position is between JPY 7,980,000 and JPY 14,820,000 (for a full-time role). The specific salary offered considers:
- The requirements, scope, complexity and responsibilities of the role
- The applicants own profile include education/qualifications, expertise, specialization, skills and experience
In the situation where you do not meet all the requirements or you significantly exceed these, the offered salary may be below or above the advertised range. In addition to your base salary, you may be eligible for additional rewards and benefits including an attractive performance-based annual bonus.
