Job Summary

  • As a member of the Life & Health Team based in Japan, this role will serve to build client relationships and provide underwriting related services to Swiss Re’s Life & Health clients.
  • This role will require frequent client contact, as well as close co-operation with other teams and stakeholders within Swiss Re.




  • Develop and implement Swiss Re Underwriting risk framework and principles and ensure risks are assumed on a sound, prudent and consistent basis
  • Lead a team of Underwriters and represent Swiss Re as a leader of the local Underwriting risk assessment and management function
  • Manage the Underwriting functions, develop sound business processes and redefine where appropriate
  • Manage policies, practices, governance, client focused projects, strategies and trends affecting Life Underwriting support 
  • Lead initiatives regarding data analytics and predictive underwriting                                       
  • Adopt a partnering approach when carrying out underwriting and audit reviews with clients
  • Lead/participate in departmental or company-wide projects in relation to Risk culture
  • Develop and conduct appropriate underwriting training programs for clients
  • Support relevant projects such as system updates, underwriting guidelines, Life Guide updates. Key contact for UW UCM system related issues                                                                                                             
  • Develop and maintain departmental standards/procedures in line with Swiss Re underwriting principles and risk management controls, case administration and reporting
  • Build and maintain a strong market profile in the underwriting community
  • Provide input to quotes and product development initiatives
  • Plan, support and conduct effective underwriting seminars, workshops and/or trainings which meet clients' specific needs
  • Participate in Swiss Re’s Global Underwriting group’s shared initiatives and solutions


Required skills


Technical skills

  • Minimum 10 years’ relevant Life & Health insurance or reinsurance underwriting experience, preferably with regional/international exposure
  • University Degree;
  • Ability to manage Underwriting functions with current and comprehensive knowledge of industry related issues. Knowledge of UW systems and strong strategic thinking, planning and organizational skills 
  • Well-developed decision making and problem-solving capabilities, time management, project management skills with the ability to work independently                                                                                                                   
  • Forward thinking, performance culture orientated
  • A solid knowledge of Claims Management practices would be considered an advantage
  • Good team player and self-starter; able to interact with people at various company levels
  • Fundamental understanding of the Japanese insurance and reinsurance industry
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Knowledge of overall company and industry operation with ability to interact positively and effectively with clients, staff and other divisional personnel to promote efficient underwriting initiatives/operational management
