About the Role

 

As a Valuation Actuary at Swiss Re Japan, you will be at the heart of our Life & Health valuation activities, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of policy liabilities across multiple reporting frameworks. This is a role where technical excellence meets business acumen — you'll collaborate across functions, engage with regulators, and contribute meaningfully to the management of a sophisticated in-force portfolio in one of the world's most important insurance markets.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Perform quarterly reserving and reporting processes for L&H business in Japan, ensuring outputs are timely, accurate, and reflective of evolving business needs
  • Ensure in-force data quality and proper determination of policy liabilities across IFRS, JGAAP, Singapore Statutory, and Swiss Statutory frameworks
  • Monitor and communicate the performance of Japan and assigned L&H business portfolios to key stakeholders
  • Track and interpret JFSA regulatory requirements, with a particular focus on economic solvency and actuarial standards, ensuring Swiss Re remains ahead of regulatory developments
  • Support cross-functional engagement with internal teams including Portfolio Management, Technical Accounting, Risk Management, and Finance to drive effective in-force portfolio management
  • Facilitate the actuarial feedback loop from valuation to pricing by liaising closely with Client Markets and Pricing teams across Asia
  • Collaborate with external clients and regulators to support transparent and effective management of L&H in-force portfolios
  • Contribute to a strong team culture, proactively fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing within the Actuarial Reserving team

 

About the Team

 

Reporting to the Head of Reporting & Analysis Japan within the Life & Health Valuation Actuarial Asia function, you will be a key contributor to the Actuarial Reserving team dedicated to the Japan market. This team sits within the broader L&H Finance division at Swiss Re, which is responsible for managing in-force business across the region.

The Valuation Actuarial team in Asia is a trusted partner to Swiss Re's L&H business, delivering high-quality financial information and expert advice on past performance and expected future profitability. The team works in close collaboration with business origination functions — including Client Markets and Pricing — as well as other units within the L&H Finance division, creating a rich, interdependent network of expertise.

This is a team that values intellectual curiosity, solutions-oriented thinking, and a collaborative spirit. You will be encouraged to proactively engage with cross-functional partners and to help drive the delivery of Swiss Re's overall in-force management mandate in Japan.


 

About You

 

We are looking for a technically strong and commercially minded actuarial professional who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. You bring a solutions-oriented mindset, the ability to communicate complex actuarial concepts clearly to diverse audiences, and a genuine enthusiasm for the Life & Health reinsurance space. You are comfortable navigating regulatory landscapes and building strong relationships across functions and cultures.

 

We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:

 

  • At least 3 years of L&H valuation or pricing experience in reinsurance, primary insurance, or insurance consultancy
  • Good progress in actuarial examinations (e.g., towards fellowship with a recognized actuarial body)
  • Working-level understanding of at least one of the following reporting frameworks: IFRS, JGAAP, or Singapore Statutory
  • Strong technical knowledge and proficiency in actuarial modelling systems, with the ability to analyze and interpret large volumes of data
  • Native-level Japanese language skills and basic English communication ability

 

These are additional nice to haves:

 

  • Experience in corporate actuarial functions within a reinsurance or insurance environment
  • Familiarity with multiple reporting frameworks (IFRS, JGAAP, Singapore Statutory, and/or Swiss Statutory)
  • Demonstrated ability to balance rigorous technical requirements with a business-oriented mindset
  • Experience liaising with regulators, particularly the JFSA, or working on economic solvency-related projects
  • Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, with a track record of effective cross-functional collaboration
  • Proficiency in data tools and programming languages used in actuarial analysis (e.g., Prophet, R, Python, or similar)

 

Our company has a hybrid work model where the expectation is that you will be in the office at least three days per week.
