Contracts Specialist
We are looking for a Contract Specialist to join our Life & Health Contracts team, supporting the US, Canada, and English Caribbean markets. In this role, you will draft and structure reinsurance contracts, ensuring terms are clear, accurate, and aligned with market practice. This is an individual contributor role reporting to the L&H Contracts Team Lead – US/Canada/English Caribbean.
About the Team
The L&H Contracts function drafts, reviews, and advises on traditional reinsurance agreements between Swiss Re and its clients. In close partnership with client managers, underwriting, pricing, claims, legal, and operations, the Contracts team:
- Structures and documents agreements aligned with underwriting intent
- Advises on wording implications and commercial risk trade-offs
- Supports disciplined portfolio management through contract analysis
Contracts plays a critical role in safeguarding Swiss Re’s risk position while enabling sustainable long-term performance.
About the Role
Draft and review reinsurance contracts
- Draft and review Life & Health traditional reinsurance contracts and addenda
- Own end-to-end drafting for assigned deals, with a high degree of independence
- Translate technical and commercial inputs into clear and enforceable contractual language
- Ensure contracts reflect deal structure, underwriting intent, and agreed commercial terms
- Deliver high-quality contracts within expected timelines
Manage contract quality and risk
- Identify and assess commercial, operational, and contractual risks
- Apply internal guidelines to determine appropriate positions and approvals
- Maintain consistency and deviation discipline across contracts
- Identify and address emerging issues and problematic clauses
- Contribute to the development and refinement of standard wordings
Partner with stakeholders and clients
- Partner with Client Managers and cross-functional stakeholders to clarify deal requirements and resolve ambiguities
- Act as a trusted advisor on contract wording and risk trade-offs
- Provide clear analysis and recommended positions to support decision-making
- Participate in contract discussions with clients, including negotiation of wording where appropriate
- Engage Legal on non-standard, jurisdiction-specific, or dispute-related matters
About You
- Proven ability to independently draft and review complex reinsurance contracts
- Experience in Life & Health reinsurance or broader insurance markets
- Strong understanding of reinsurance structures and underwriting concepts
- Sound commercial judgment and risk assessment capability
- Confidence engaging directly with business stakeholders and clients
- Comfortable using technology, workflow tools, and GenAI
Ideal Candidate Background
- Reinsurer or insurer with exposure to Life & Health treaty documentation
- In-house legal or contracting roles within insurance or financial services
- Law firm or advisory roles involving re/insurance or complex financial contracts
- Proficiency in French is an advantage, but not required

The base salary hiring range for this exisitng position is CAD $92,000-138,000 . The specific base salary offered for this or any given role will take into account a number of factors including but not limited to job location, scope of role, qualifications, complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent, experience, education, and employer budget. This means that we consider all components of compensation in their totality (such as base pay, short-and long-term incentives, and benefits offered), in setting individual compensation.
