Team Leader, Mining & Energy Canada

About the Role
As the team lead for the Mining & Energy underwriting team in Canada, you will work closely with the regional team as well as colleagues across our global industry practice to advance and execute on our market strategy, ensuring alignment with our business objectives. In this role, you will manage your own portfolio of accounts while guiding and mentoring a team of underwriters in Toronto and Vancouver. You will collaborate and be supported by a broad group of internal stakeholders including risk engineering experts, International Program managers, claims managers, contracts specialists, actuaries and operations team to drive profitable business and maintain our leading position in the Canadian insurance market.
Key responsibilities include:
Business Origination & Market Engagement
• Maintain and build Swiss Re's brand awareness amongst clients and brokers. Drive new business production and strengthen relationships with key brokering partners.
• Identify growth opportunities and contribute to the performance of the global Energy portfolio.
• Develop and maintain strong productive relationships with client and broker.
• Represent Swiss Re Corporate Solutions in client meetings, industry events and conferences.
Underwriting & Portfolio Management
• Underwrite and administer your own portfolio of complex Mining, Downstream and Power accounts while overseeing and supporting the underwriters in Toronto and Vancouver.
• Advance our local market strategy and ensuring all business written aligns with risk appetite.
• Coach and support underwriters to enhance on their capabilities and ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines.
• Provide guidance and support to underwriting assistants helping them to reach their full potential.
• As team lead, you will be the key point of contact for matters relating to the Canadian Mining and Energy Portfolio for internal stakeholders.
• Contribute to the financial planning process and regularly monitor progress against targets.

About the Team
You will be part of Corporate Solutions' Energy practice, a global team of specialized underwriters serving clients in the Upstream, Downstream, Power and Mining industries through retail and wholesale marketplaces around the world. You will report to the Head of Mining, along with your other colleagues in Switzerland, UK and Australia and have direct management responsibility for Mining & Energy underwriters in Canada.
In addition, you collaborate closely with Energy underwriters in other locations and with adjacent functions such as Actuarial Portfolio Management, Risk Engineering Services, Claims, Finance, and Risk Management.
About You
• University degree or equivalent
• 10+ years of in-depth property underwriting experience in Mining/Energy lines or large complex risks
• Experience in leading a team is considered an advantage, with strong interpersonal skills and proven track record in talent development, coaching and mentoring
• Strong professional networking skills, internally and externally. Broad network with corporate clients and brokers is considered an advantage
• Strong leadership and management skills, and ability to inspire, motivate and build trust
• Excellent negotiation and communication skills
• Open-minded, self-motivated and proactive, approaching problems with curiosity and agility
• Results-driven, entrepreneurial mindset with focus on execution
• Capacity to handle high workloads, remains calm and focused under pressure and in the face of uncertainty.
• Have a good understanding of market dynamics and trends.
