Zurich, Zurich, CH
Claims Expert - Mediterranean & Middle East (Hybrid; m/f/x/d; 80-100%)
About the Role
Based in Swiss Re's Zurich office, this comprehensive role places you at the heart of our Property & Casualty claims activity for the Mediterranean and Middle East markets. You'll be both a technical anchor and a market-facing ambassador — analysing complex claims, building and nurturing key client relationships, and contributing to the strategic direction of our portfolio across these dynamic and diverse regions. This is a role for someone who loves the depth of claims work and the breadth of market engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
-
Analyse and assess claims from both quantum and liability perspectives, reviewing presentations from original policy and reinsurance angles — driving sound outcomes that protect Swiss Re's and clients' bottom lines.
-
Lead the monitoring and development of claims and portfolios under your responsibility, processing claims in line with defined workflows, systems, and guidelines while ensuring full adherence to established processes.
-
Build and expand your market network — representing Swiss Re in relevant professional bodies and cultivating relationships with clients, attorneys and loss adjusters across the Mediterranean and Middle East regions
-
Promote Swiss Re's technical claims expertise and profile in the market, with a particular focus on Key Clients, reinforcing our reputation as a trusted and knowledgeable partner.
-
Maintain and deepen client relationships in line with the principle of right service for the right clients, contributing to thought-leading internal networks that amplify client impact.
-
Monitor and report on legal developments and other relevant changes across the Mediterranean and Middle East markets and your claims portfolio, keeping the business informed and agile.
-
Actively contribute to cross-functional market teams (XFT), supporting underwriters with your insights and helping to shape market strategy and enhance portfolio profitability.
-
Support the development and promotion of products and solutions tailored to insurance market needs, contributing to Swiss Re's growth agenda.
-
Plan and conduct claims reviews and audits, coordinating with clients on remedial actions to continuously raise profitability of the portfolio and enhance claims handling standards.
About the Team
You will join a diverse claims team based in Zurich — a group that spans across a wide range of professional backgrounds and nationalities. Day to day, you'll collaborate with your peers across Europe, primarily in Zurich, Milan and Paris and regularly engage with clients across the Mediterranean and Middle East regions. The team is part of a broader European claims community that values knowledge-sharing, mutual support, and a collective commitment to claims excellence. Collaboration is at the core of how we operate — you'll always have a strong network around you.
About You
You are a self-driven, entrepreneurial claims professional with abundant energy, resilience, and a strong sense of integrity. You bring excellent influencing, communication, and presentation skills that allow you to engage confidently with clients, business partners, and senior stakeholders. You are equally comfortable working independently and as a collaborative team member. You are open to travel and bring a genuine sensitivity to cultural differences — qualities that are especially important given the diverse nature of the Mediterranean and Middle East markets.
We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:
-
University degree in Law, Engineering, Finance or Insurance studies: A successfully completed degree in a relevant discipline is a plus, though equivalent professional experience is equally valued
-
P&C primary insurance claims experience: Proven, hands-on experience in a relevant insurance and/or reinsurance claims environment
-
Strong portfolio-based claims handling: Demonstrated ability to identify and interpret claim trends and developments, and to adjudicate individual claims effectively to drive positive outcomes
-
Fluency in English — both written and spoken — is a mandatory requirement for this role, given the international scope of the position and the need to communicate effectively across diverse markets and internal teams
-
Proficiency in MS Office: Solid working knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, and Word for reporting, analysis, and client and stakeholder presentations is a must.
-
Data literacy: Comfort working with tools and data in the claims decision making and portfolio analysis; Power BI experience and first experiences with AI tools like ChatGPT and Co-pilot is helpful.
These are additional nice to haves:
-
Market knowledge: understanding of the Property & Casualty insurance landscape across the Mediterranean and/or Middle East, including relevant legal frameworks, market dynamics, and key players
-
Experience in professional bodies or industry networks: Prior engagement with relevant market bodies or industry associations in the Mediterranean or Middle East would be an advantage
-
Additional language skills: Proficiency in Arabic, French, Italian, German, Greek, Turkish, or other languages relevant to the Mediterranean and Middle East markets would be a significant advantage
-
Cross-functional collaboration experience: A track record of working effectively across teams — with underwriters, reserving, or other business functions — to deliver shared goals
