About the Team

With more than USD 150 bn of assets under management, Swiss Re Asset Management manages the assets generated through the core insurance and reinsurance business. With the advent of technologies such as cognitive computing, smart analytics or machine learning the reinsurance area will radically change in the next years in terms of distribution, underwriting and administration of insurance protection. As a recognized leader in the industry, Swiss Re is running numerous use cases and is building up research and development units utilizing state of the art digital analytics in order to offer actionable research and transformational opportunities.

The Smart Analytics team has a mission to prototype and deliver advanced analytics solutions using techniques ranging from statistical modelling, to machine learning and deep learning, serving stakeholders across the Asset Management value chain.

This is why we are looking for passionate and smart individuals who wish to explore and apply the latest techniques in statistical modeling, machine learning and deep learning in a financial context

About the Role

We are opening this role for aspiring data scientists with strong interpersonal and technical skills who are eager to learn and broaden their knowledge and expertise within the fast growing field of financial data science, with a focus on Natural Language Processing. The position is part of our Digital Talent Programme, hence we invite people with a PhD or Master degree with 0-3 years of professional experience to apply for this unique opportunity.


The programme offers you the chance to join the dynamic, fast-moving world of a specialised financial services organisation. Over an 18-month period, you will receive on-the-job trainings in your role and opportunities to work on projects and conduct job rotations in our main locations (Zurich, London, New York and Bratislava). The customised trainings will focus on systemic leadership, specific digital topics and asset management relevant courses. The projects will require you to live for several months in at least two non-home locations (for instance, if you are based in Zurich you should complete projects in London and New York). Moreover, a rotation to a business unit is part of the curriculum and can be completed in any of our main locations.


In Particular, The Role Will Involve

  • Generating business insights advanced analytical (statistical, machine learning and text mining) methods to answer business problems in Asset Management and in different (Re-) Insurance domains.
  • Working closely with key members in Asset Management in identifying, analyzing and interpreting trends or patterns in complex financial data sets
  • Current work stream of exposure might include the following:
    • Information retrieval and text classification techniques in a financial context
    • Traditinal and alternative data analysis for trading opportunities identification
    • Applying machine-learning methods for market and portfolio risk evaluation
    • Development of asset management ontology in close collaboration with the rest of the Swiss Re group


You are ideal candidate if you have a solid background in computer science/engineering, mathematics, statistics, physics or any other computationally intense disciplines and possesses working experience in at least one of the following domains: statistical and machine learning, natural language processing, deep learning and information visualisation.


Key Tasks

  • Initiate, lead and drive analytics projects from inception to completion with minimal guidance
  • Build up trusted relationships with key business and IT stakeholders to become a valuable partner for the field of data analytics.
  • Apply analytical methods and algorithms to build data products that streamline the process from data collection to insight generation.
  • Foster new data-driven approaches to generate business insight in order to address unanswered business problems in a proactive way.
  • Validate, interpret and present data findings to both an expert and non-expert audience.
  • Contribute in an agile team of data scientists to develop and deploy data-driven solutions for various Insurance and Reinsurance business problems (i.e., business projects as well as ad-hoc analyses).
  • Assess analytics scenarios by means of functional prototypes or pilot solutions.
  • Ensure further development of Swiss Re's analytics capabilities in interplay with system engineers, solution architects and internal business experts.


About You


  • You have Master's or Ph.D. in a quantitative discipline: e.g., computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, physics, operational research, engineering
  • 0 - 3 years of experience (in the industry or academic)  in analytics (machine learning, statistics, data and text mining)
  • Solid focus in at least on one of the two: i) data science for financial data / investment management or ii) natural language processing
  • You have great analytical & conceptual skills to understand key business needs and design tailored solutions to solve specific business problems
  • You have ability to communicate complex analysis results in a clear, precise and actionable manner
  • A track-record in implementing business solutions in the area of information retrieval, natural language processing, data analytics and information visualisation.
  • Keen interest in the financial markets and investment management
  • Proficiency in at least two of the following programming languages: Python, R, Matlab
  • Fluency in relational databases/SQL

  • Familiarity with extraction, transformation and loading of data from a variety of data sources using SQL and other 'big data' technologies e.g.  Elastic Stack (Search, Logstash, Kibana), Apache (Kafka), Azure Cognitive Services
  • Interest in optimization of information retrieval with a focus on Search and Indexing
  • Experience in building scalable data pipelines/data engineering
  • Basic abilities in DevOps and mindset towards micro-services (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Eager to try out new technologies
  • Excellent verbal and written English skills, ideally multi-lingual
  • Project management experience preferred
  • Flexibility to travel
