Group Underwriting Intern

About the Role

As an Intern in the integrated Portfolio Strategy & Steering team, you will work on real underwriting portfolio questions using data, engineering and analytical techniques.

You will work alongside underwriting portfolio managers and experienced engineers to explore portfolio data, investigate risks and opportunities, and develop practical analytical tools predominantly in Palantir.

This is a hands-on role offering exposure to the full delivery lifecycle. You will contribute to live use cases, from understanding the business question and exploring data through to building, testing and presenting solutions. You will receive guidance from experienced team members while taking meaningful ownership of defined pieces of work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development of underwriting-specific data products, analytical tools and Palantir workflows.
  • Explore and analyse portfolio data to identify patterns, performance drivers, concentrations, dependencies and potential areas for further investigation.
  • Develop data transformations, analytical components, visualisations and prototypes using Python, SQL or other relevant tools.
  • Support testing, validation and documentation to help ensure that solutions are reliable and understandable.
  • Work with team members and users to understand the business questions behind the analysis.
  • Present analytical findings and explain the approach, assumptions and limitations clearly.
  • Contribute ideas for improving existing tools, analytical methods and ways of working.
  • Build practical knowledge of underwriting, portfolio management, data engineering and analytical product development.

About the Team

The Portfolio Strategy & Steering team brings together underwriting portfolio management, engineering, data and advanced analytical capabilities.

The team operates as one integrated group, with team members holding distinct but complementary accountabilities and jointly responsible for priorities, quality and impact.

Interns are treated as contributing members of the team and are given meaningful work aligned with current underwriting portfolio priorities.

About You

You are intellectually curious, analytical and motivated by solving difficult, real-world problems. You are interested in how data and technology can improve commercial decisions and want to apply your skills in a practical business environment.

You enjoy working with data, learning unfamiliar concepts and turning analysis into clear conclusions. You are comfortable asking questions, testing assumptions and taking responsibility for the quality of your work.

You do not need prior underwriting experience, but you should be interested in understanding the business context and decisions behind the work you undertake.

We are looking for candidates who bring:

  • current study towards, or recent completion of, a degree in a quantitative, technical or commercially relevant discipline.
  • practical experience using Python, SQL or another analytical programming language through academic, personal or professional projects.  Experience developing AI-enabled products or analytical capabilities would be an advantage.
  • ability to work with data, structure analytical problems and communicate findings clearly.
  • strong problem-solving capability, attention to detail and intellectual curiosity.
  • willingness to learn new technologies, analytical methods and business concepts.
  • ability to work collaboratively while taking ownership of defined tasks.
  • an interest in insurance, reinsurance, underwriting, portfolio management or data-driven commercial decision-making.

Please note; This is a 6 month internship, ideally starting in February 2027. There will be an expectation to attend the office at least 3 days/ week, with the option for remote working on the remaining days.

The base salary range for this position will be shared with you during the interview process.
