Senior Economist Macro Strategy (80-100%) (Temporary for 1 year)

Please note this role is offered as 1-year temporary contract, with preferred start date of 1st February 2026. 

 

About the Role

 

As a Senior Economist in our Macro Strategy team, based in Zurich, you will take a leading role in identifying and analyzing global macro themes, shaping macro forecasts and scenarios, and monitoring geopolitical and financial risks. You will be responsible for driving key projects that inform Swiss Re’s capital planning, business steering, and senior management decision-making. In this senior role, you are expected to take ownership of initiatives, provide thought leadership, and manage diverse stakeholders, demonstrating adaptability and autonomy in a dynamic environment.

 

Key tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Develop, maintain, and communicate baseline and alternative macroeconomic scenarios, ensuring consistency across forecasts and risk assessments
  • Collaborate with other economists/insurance analysts within the team on global/regional economic and insurance trends and research projects, including contributions to the flagship sigma publication series
  • Project management for strategic internal initiatives that support capital planning and business steering
  • Coordinate creation and submissions of presentations for high-level internal committees, e.g., slides and analysis on macroeconomic outlook
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to internal and external stakeholders
  • Support the Group Chief Economist and other senior colleagues in various tasks (e.g., background notes, designing slides, some administrative tasks, etc.)

 

 

About the Team

 

The Macro Strategy team is part of the Swiss Re Institute, which is responsible for analyzing and forecasting the global macroeconomic and insurance market environment. The Macro Strategy team acts as a hub for economic expertise within Swiss Re, working at the intersection of economics, insurance, and global financial markets to provide high-quality analysis, insights and scenarios that support Swiss Re's capital allocation, strategic steering, risk management, thought leadership and client dialogue. The team is located across geographies, is highly visible and interacts with a wide variety of key partners and decision makers across Swiss Re and externally.

 

 

About You

 

We are looking for a senior professional who thrives in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, demonstrating flexibility, adaptability, and autonomy while taking ownership of key initiatives.

 

Key qualifications and skills:

  • At least 3 years' experience working as an economist or in the financial services industry more broadly
  • Completed university degree in Economics or Finance, ideally at Master's level
  • Excellent ability to break down, visualize, and communicate complex concepts in a clear, compelling and digestible way, both written and verbal
  • Strong interest in and motivation to learn about re/insurance (prior knowledge a distinct advantage)
  • Track record of project management, leading initiatives and managing stakeholders
  • Ability to mentor and guide junior colleagues, fostering collaboration and growth within the team
  • Pragmatic and proactive mindset with a high degree of initiative and accountability
  • Ability to learn new tools quickly, e.g., Macrobond for analyzing and visualizing macroeconomic data
  • Outstanding English skills (written and verbal); additional languages such as German are an advantage
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
